Chinnalpattu sarees derive its name from the village Chinnalpatti. Chinnalpatti Is a small town in the Dindigul district in the Madurai zone. Surrounded by green Tirumala hills the village life is all about calm and pleasant mornings and happy, tranquil days. One would hear the sounds of birds and experience a cool breeze very often. Major attractions around the village are Kutladampatti falls, Chinnalapatti arulmigu sounderrajaperumal temple, Manjalar dam, and so on.
A few decades ago every household in Chinnalpatti village had a loom making silk sarees. The number has reduced drastically now. There are new single ikkat sarees and sungudi sarees being made there.
The major original attraction is – Silk sarees made from remaining silk. These are beautiful, soft, shiny, and easy to drape sarees suitable for every occasion. Our weaver is a fourth-generation weaver in his family. As per the family tradition, they have been weaving these sarees for many decades. Women have a major role to play in weaving. In fact, Chinnalpatti has an 84% literacy rate which is equal amongst boys and girls compared to 80% literacy rate of Tamilnadu.
